When pain lingers after being struck

The Spine & Pain Center focuses on pain coming from the spine, discs, joints and nerves: a stiff neck that hasn’t eased, low back pain that spreads into a leg, or a hip or knee that still hurts weeks later. The visit starts with a history, a hands-on exam and a review of any imaging. A procedure is offered only when the evaluation supports it.

Your care in Midtown Manhattan

In Midtown, Yuri Gordin, MD, a Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation and Pain Medicine physician, evaluates your injuries and talks you through the options. If your plan includes physical therapy, it continues with the same practice in Brooklyn or Staten Island.

Everyone is different. Treatment options and results vary from person to person.

Coming from uptown or across Manhattan

Many of our Midtown patients come from Spanish Harlem (East Harlem) and Washington Heights. From East Harlem, the 6 train or the M101, M102 or M103 bus runs straight down to the office. From Washington Heights, take the A or C and change to the E, or ride the M101. We also see patients from Midtown, Midtown East, Turtle Bay and UN Plaza, the Upper East Side, the Upper West Side, Harlem and the Financial District.

First steps

01

See a clinician

Pain, numbness, headaches or stiffness after being struck are all reasons to be examined.

02

Ask about no-fault

A pedestrian is generally covered by the no-fault policy of the vehicle that hit them, or by their own household’s auto policy. The no-fault application generally has to be filed within 30 days of the accident.

03

Call with your claim

Have the claim number and the auto insurer’s name ready. The office deals with the insurer on the treatment paperwork.

For a medical emergency, call 911.

Who you’ll see at this office

Struck in a Manhattan crosswalk

Turning cars, taxis, delivery trucks and buses share Manhattan crosswalks with people on foot. If you were struck in Midtown, on the East Side, in Harlem or in Washington Heights, the Spine & Pain Center evaluates the spine, joint and nerve pain that can follow, with EMG and nerve conduction testing when nerve symptoms need a closer look.

Questions

What is a no-fault doctor?

In New York, no-fault coverage pays for necessary medical treatment after a motor vehicle accident regardless of who caused it, and that includes pedestrians struck by a vehicle. A no-fault doctor treats you under that coverage. We bill the no-fault insurer directly. If any amount goes unpaid, we pursue it ourselves through arbitration or litigation, and this doesn’t affect you.

Which insurance covers a pedestrian who was hit by a car?

A pedestrian struck by a vehicle in New York is generally covered under the no-fault policy of the vehicle that hit them, or under their own household’s auto policy if they have one. The office checks which policy applies before your visit. If you were working at the time, for example walking a delivery route, it may be a workers’ comp case instead. This is general information, not legal advice. For questions about who is responsible or about a lawsuit, consult an attorney.

What kind of doctor should I see?

For emergencies, go to the ER or call 911. For neck, back, joint and nerve pain afterward, a physician who focuses on the muscles, spine and nerves is a good place to start. At our Midtown Manhattan office you’ll see Yuri Gordin, MD.

How long can I wait to see a doctor?

It’s better not to wait. Early care documents the injury, and the no-fault application generally has to be submitted within 30 days of the accident under New York regulation 11 NYCRR 65-1.1.

Why do symptoms show up a day or two later?

Pain and stiffness often build after the adrenaline wears off. The Mayo Clinic notes that whiplash symptoms most often start within days of the injury, so it’s worth being checked even if you felt fine at the scene.

I don’t have health insurance. Can I still be treated?

Yes. After being struck by a vehicle, your health insurance generally isn’t used. No-fault is generally billed to the insurer of the vehicle that hit you, or to your own household’s auto policy if you have one, so you don’t need health insurance for this care. The office checks which policy applies before your visit.

Can I switch to your office from another doctor?

You can choose or transfer to us; we’ll help with the paperwork. You may treat with any provider you like, as long as the provider accepts no-fault. Bring your claim number and any records.

What should I bring to my first visit?

Photo ID; the police report number, if there is one; the driver’s insurance information and any claim number; your own household’s auto insurance information, if you have it; the date and place of the accident; any ER paperwork or imaging; and a list of your medications.

I was hit by a cyclist, not a car. Is that covered the same way?

Not necessarily. No-fault generally applies when a motor vehicle is involved, so a collision with a bicycle may be handled differently. Call with the details and the office will check your options. This is general information, not legal advice. For questions about who is responsible or about a lawsuit, consult an attorney.

Can I come from Washington Heights or East Harlem?

Yes, and many of our Midtown patients do. From East Harlem the 6 train or the M101, M102 or M103 bus is a direct ride; from Washington Heights take the A or C to the E, or the M101.
