What it feels like
Stiffness or aching in the neck, pain that spreads to the shoulder or arm, headaches that start at the base of the skull, numbness or tingling in the hand.
Common causes
Muscle strain from posture or screens, a disc problem pressing on a nerve (radiculopathy), arthritis of the small neck joints, whiplash after a car accident.
When to get care soon
Numbness or weakness in both arms or the legs, trouble walking or with balance, loss of bladder or bowel control, neck pain with fever or after a serious fall. Seek care the same day.
How we evaluate it
Movement and strength testing, a check of the nerves in the arms, and imaging only when the exam suggests it would change the plan.

Questions
Will I need an MRI for neck pain?
Usually not at first. Most neck pain improves with movement and therapy; imaging is ordered when nerve symptoms persist or the exam points to a specific problem.
Is it whiplash?
If the pain started after a car accident, it may be. See Care after a car accident; no-fault insurance usually covers treatment in New York.
