Who it helps
Pain from an irritated spinal nerve: sciatica and leg pain from a lumbar disc herniation or spinal stenosis, and arm pain from a cervical disc or nerve problem, when it has not settled with therapy and medication.
What happens
The physician places a small amount of anti-inflammatory medication next to the irritated nerve, using X-ray (fluoroscopy) guidance. An interlaminar injection enters between the vertebrae from the back; a transforaminal injection targets the opening where the specific nerve exits the spine. The visit takes about an hour including recovery, and you can usually return to light activity the next day. Relief, when it comes, is used to progress your therapy plan.
