Occupational therapy

Occupational therapy focuses on the tasks of daily life and work: gripping, lifting, typing, getting dressed, doing your job. If an injury, a painful condition or surgery has made those tasks hard, an occupational therapist works with you to get them back (see what is occupational therapy?). That includes hand and arm recovery after neck surgery; see spine surgery recovery. For relearning hand and arm skills after a stroke, see occupational therapy after stroke.

Your first visit is an evaluation. The therapist looks at how your hand and arm move, your strength and grip, and the tasks you need to get back to, then builds a plan with hands-on treatment, exercise and a home programme. You are re-assessed at set points so you know the plan is working.

Hand therapy

Hand therapy is a specialty within occupational (and physical) therapy focused on the hand and arm. It is used for pain, stiffness, weakness, numbness or loss of fine motor control in the fingers, hand and wrist.

Upper extremity therapy

Upper extremity therapy covers the whole arm: shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand. Our occupational therapist specializes in upper extremity and fine motor injuries and conditions, so the plan can look at how the whole arm works together, not only where it hurts.

What we treat

Which of these fits you depends on the evaluation. Results vary from person to person.

Physicians and testing in the same office

If your therapist thinks a doctor should look at your hand or arm, a physician at the Brooklyn office can see you without sending you somewhere else. When carpal tunnel or another trapped nerve is suspected, EMG and nerve conduction testing can be done in the office. See also elbow, wrist and hand pain and physical and occupational therapy.

Se habla español. Spanish-speaking staff are available at the Brooklyn office.
